Punjab Police Finalizes Security Plan for Muharram

More than 124,000 police personnel to secure 47,280 majalis and mourning processions across Punjab.

Punjab Police has finalized a comprehensive security plan to ensure a safe and peaceful Muharram-ul-Haram across the province, with enhanced arrangements for majalis and mourning processions.

According to Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Karim, a total of 47,280 religious gatherings and mourning processions will be provided security during the first ten days of Muharram. These include 37,868 majalis and 9,412 processions across Punjab, including Lahore.

More than 124,000 police officers and personnel will perform security duties during Ashura preparations. Over 41,200 personnel will be deployed for the security of majalis, while more than 73,400 officers and officials will secure mourning processions.

LAHORE (Zuaib Butt)Punjab Police spokesperson said over 9,500 personnel will conduct effective patrolling around procession routes, majalis, and other sensitive locations. Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, PERU teams, and other field formations will actively participate in Muharram security operations.

IG Punjab directed that Safe Cities cameras be used for continuous monitoring of processions and gatherings, while CCTV cameras, metal detectors, and walk-through gates will be installed at sensitive locations.

He urged religious scholars, community leaders, and peace committees to promote harmony and help maintain law and order. Authorities will strictly enforce Section 144, the Loudspeaker Act, and all government-issued security SOPs. Movement of fourth-schedule individuals will be closely monitored to prevent any attempt to incite sectarian tensions.

The IG Punjab further stated that mourning processions and majalis will only be allowed at approved locations and routes. Action will also be taken against those involved in spreading hate material, wall chalking, banners, posters, or inflammatory content on social media.

A ban on pillion riding will remain in effect on 9th and 10th Muharram, with exemptions for senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel. District-level Muharram control rooms have been activated and will remain connected round-the-clock with the Central Police Office control room.
