Abdul Aleem Khan Orders Intelligent Transport, Cashless Toll Systems on Highways

Federal minister directs nationwide rollout of modern traffic management and electronic tolling infrastructure

LAHORE(Zuaib Butt) Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has ordered the priority implementation of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) on major highways across Pakistan, with immediate inclusion of the M-2 Motorway in the modernization program.

During a visit to the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters, the minister directed authorities to integrate cameras, security infrastructure and communication networks into a unified technological framework aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing public safety.

Abdul Aleem Khan also instructed the immediate introduction of a cashless and free-flow electronic toll collection system on major routes across the country. He emphasized that the modern tolling network should be linked directly with Safe City security systems to strengthen traffic monitoring and assist law enforcement agencies in crime prevention.

The minister stressed the need to improve facilities for travelers, directing that Motorway Police personnel be present at all motorway service areas and that uniform standards of public services be maintained nationwide.

He further ordered the deployment of Rescue 1122 teams, fire brigades and fully equipped ambulances at all motorway and national highway service areas. Authorities were also directed to enhance emergency response mechanisms and work toward the early introduction of air ambulance services.

Addressing road safety concerns, Abdul Aleem Khan instructed the Motorway Police to ensure that safety standards on the Murree Expressway and other major highways comply with legal requirements. He also ordered special safety measures on northern routes, including the immediate installation of guard rails on the Jaglot-Skardu Road and Mansehra-Kaghan-Naran Road.

The minister directed that temporary IBEX rest rooms in tourist destinations be upgraded into permanent and fully equipped rest areas to provide better facilities for tourists and transporters.

During the high-level meeting, officials reviewed key operational and administrative matters, while several strategic recommendations aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s highway infrastructure and traffic management system were approved.
