Lahore (Zuaib Butt) The Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) has achieved a historic breakthrough in transplant medicine by successfully completing 10 liver transplants within a span of just 24 hours, setting a new benchmark in the country’s healthcare sector.
The extraordinary achievement enabled nine children and one adult patient to receive life-saving transplants from only three organ donors. Through the innovative use of domino and auxiliary liver transplant techniques, PKLI maximized the utilization of available donor organs, offering hope to patients suffering from rare metabolic and genetic disorders.
According to hospital officials, the medical team successfully carried out seven domino liver transplants and eight auxiliary liver transplants, demonstrating exceptional expertise and coordination in handling complex surgical procedures.
The achievement was accomplished under the leadership of Professor Faisal Saud Dar and a team of highly skilled surgeons, physicians, anesthetists, and healthcare professionals. Their efforts have been widely praised as a landmark success in Pakistan’s medical history.
Hospital authorities confirmed that all transplant recipients have recovered successfully and have been discharged from the hospital after receiving post-operative care.
The successful combination of domino and auxiliary liver transplantation techniques is being viewed as a major advancement in the treatment of rare inherited metabolic diseases and is expected to increase opportunities for saving more lives through efficient organ utilization.
Provincial Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman congratulated the PKLI team on the remarkable achievement, describing it as a proud moment for Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
PKLI has continued to strengthen its position as a national center of excellence in transplantation and advanced medical care. The institute has so far performed 1,175 liver transplants and 1,276 kidney transplants, reflecting its growing contribution to life-saving healthcare services in Pakistan.
